Mayor Emanuel is asking the parents of the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) to demand longer school days for their children. Teachers have already disscussed and agreed upon this idea outside of the Teachers Unioin. This program is supposed to add 90 minuets to the initial school day. Reading and Math classes will extend from 70 minuets to 90 minuets. Five minuets will be added to other classes including Physical Education, Art, Technology, as well as Engineering. To join in the pilot the majority of the teachers need to take a vote to waive the current contract of the Teachers Union. However board members may cancel the pilot at any point in time with a "reasonable explanation" such as CPS can no longer afford to run the pilot. The teachers in CPS voted 13 to 4 to have longer school days starting on September 26th 2011. One of the teachers that voted for this said, "We did it because we felt the kids here need it." CPS, including the mayor, is hoping that they will set an example and other schools will do the same.

This new program will effect the efficiancy of the children in the future. They'd be able to get better jobs after they've gotten out of school, and be more productive in society . This program is also going to effect the economic stability, because it can become an issue if the students are doing something that they aren't supposed to be doing. (such as drinking, and doing drugs) However there is a slight disadvantage to this program. Due to the reasoning that they are starting the pilot in public schoo systems, teachers would be putting in extra hours that they didn't have before. Therefor the issue is the raising of taxes, because it would be government funding to pay the teachers.
