Shah, Anup. “Nigeria and Oil.” Global Issues 10 June 2010. 1. Web. 8 Sep 2011.
In this article, Anup Shah informs us about the glory and cost of glory concerning Nigerian oil. The oil corporations have cost Nigeria much of its security in almost all aspects. Because of most of the complications dealing with the Oil business, many riots and protests have occurred among the people near the Nigerian Delta. Also, the involvements of some specific fuel companies, such as Shell, have further worsened the situation. As an added predicament, the literal drilling of the oil itself has deteriorated the stability of the land, environment, government, and the economy. Such a high price to, pay for wealth.
Concerning the connection of the concepts we have already discussed, the issues dealing with Nigerian oil and our topics go hand in hand. Through my view of the situation, the scarcity of the Nigerian oil in itself is the most significant cause AND effect of all the problems affiliated with it. The opportunity cost runs quite high for the amount of gain in wealth being received. A trade off: wealth for almost any and every type of damage possibly inflicted on a country. The drilling ruins the land and pollutes the air. The specific scenario in Nigeria demonstrates the phrase “There is no such thing as a free lunch”. On top of that, considerable amounts of opposition to the many riots have killed thousands of people, also incorporating the head-butting opinions of some religions such as Christianity and Islam. Granted, over the last 5 years, the role of the government has improved due to its transformation, which mainly included a more free and welcoming attitude. However, the military seems to crack down very harshly on the rioters, many times, to a life-threatening extent. But this has not stopped the inevitable clashes. So, from my economic point of view, Nigerian oil corporations provoke many horrible events and much destruction, all for a simple advance in wealth.
